MHC Announces Collaboration with CAPI Physicians

October 13, 2008

MHC is pleased to announce collaboration with the Connecticut Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (CAPI). CAPI volunteer physicians will be joining other on site volunteers and tertiary medical care providers from hospitals including Saint Francis, UCONN, Hartford Hospital , Manchester Memorial and many private practices. CAPI Past President and current board member, Prasad Srinivasan, M.D. describes the collaboration between MHC and CAPI noting, “In CAPI there are physicians from all over the state with a wide range of capabilities. Some of us are researchers, some teachers and some clinicians. We believe it is important to keep in mind our community at large. Being involved in charitable work results in a win-win situation the greatest beneficiary being the giver. In life, it should be said of us that we contributed and have made a difference. It is in giving that we receive”

The Malta House of Care, Inc. (MHC) began offering free primary health care services to the uninsured of greater Hartford in July of 2006. The Malta House of Care Mobile Clinic provides this care, without discrimination, free to the uninsured of greater Hartford including all required pharmaceutical and testing needs of the patients. The MHC Mobile Clinic enables volunteer medical providers to support underserved communities; bring care to underserved populations; facilitate patient care management; improve medical interpretation; address health literacy; and aide in navigation of the health care system resulting in a continuing positive impact on health services in greater Hartford . The primary benefits of MHC medical services are: detection of medical problems, education of patients, and treatment and prevention through proper medical care and education.

Peter Kelly , Chairman of Malta House of Care, Inc., adds, “As a result of the service of our medical volunteers, we estimate that for every dollar we spend, a local hospital, clinic or community health center avoids spending not less than $3.00 and as much as $7.00.” MHC primary care is offered without discrimination, with appropriate emphasis on untreated conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and other conditions acknowledged as prevalent in the greater Hartford area. Routine medications and tests are provided free of charge to patients. Those requiring tertiary care are referred to other partnering facilities and physicians.

The mobile clinic is currently open on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday each week (see schedule below). In addition to primary care exams, testing, x-rays, and pharmaceuticals needed for the continuing diagnosis and care of each patient are also provided as required at no cost to the patients. Only those without insurance are eligible. The MHC covers the fees for tests and drugs through the fundraising efforts of the Malta House of Care Foundation.
