Honors for our volunteers

L’Oreal Paris recently awarded our own Volunteer Extraordinaire Dr. Pauline Olsen the prestigious honor of Women Of Worth 2010 for her volunteer efforts with the Malta House of Care Mobile Clinic and her lifetime of commitment to those in need. Dr. Olsen was selected as one of ten honorees from 2,100 nominees across the USA and was recognized for her volunteer achievements and positive influence on her community and the world.

As a recipient, Dr. Olsen donated the award of $5,000 to Malta House of Care Foundation. We gratefully thank her for her generosity! WATCH THE VIDEO HERE!

Congratulations to another two of our dedicated volunteer physicians who have been recognized for their lifetime achievements.  Brad Wilkinson, MD  was recently honored as a 2010 Local Hero by the Bank of America Foundation Neighborhood Builder Program. Dr. Wilkinson has generously donated his $5,000 award to MHC.  Theresa Caputo, MD  was awarded the Eastern Connecticut Health Network Outstanding Achievement Award for Community Service. She has also been nominated as a Hartford Business Journal Health Hero.

We agree that all of our volunteers are heroes every day to the patients who receive their medical care.

MHC Training the Next Generation Of Health Care Providers

Recognizing the importance of training the next generation of health care providers in volunteerism and care for the uninsured, MHC Medical Director, Laurel Baldwin-Ragaven, MD has recruited students and hosted learners from a number of Connecticut institutions.  The MHC clinic has hosted students from Sacred Heart University, School of Nursing, with 5 RN students;  from St. Joseph’s College, Nursing with student volunteers for MHC influenza clinics, and Bachelor of Social Work and Bachelor of Science Nursing students; from UCONN 4th year medical student doing an elective focused on diabetes care; a 3rd year Pharmacy student; and, 4 undergraduate students in a program for under-represented minorities in medicine/scientific research; from Asylum Hill Family Practice Center/UCONN Dept. of Family Medicine, 7 residents doing an elective in community-based primary care; and, from the Sawyer School, one medical assistant externship student. One student said, “I felt that I was doing more than just shadowing but, rather, was directly involved in the experience.  Seeing how sympathetic and kind the doctors were and how patients were so thankful for their time and help definitely motivates me to continue along the path to becoming a doctor.”
